I had the honor of attending my first WETA Digital Oscar party earlier this week.
It was nothing short of whimsical.
The bouts of pouring rain didn’t stop hundreds of Wetanarians from partying and celebrating the fact that two of their films (Iron Man 3 and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) were nominated for Oscars.
The party was held at the beautiful Foxglove restaurant, which overlooked the waterfront (and is probably one of the nicest formal dining out options in Wellington Harbor).
This so-called Oscar party didn’t involve watching the Oscars for the most part (very few were scattered in front of the TVs). As with any party, it was more about socializing, dancing, drinking, and celebrating the amazing accomplishments and hard work of everyone there (me excluded, obviously).
Conversation topics ranged from New Zealand, future career moves, creativity, art, inspiration, travel, and loving what you do. It was again quite humbling to be amongst a crowd of so many talented people…. and the stereotype that everyone at Weta is a geek? So not true. Because, damn, these guys (over half of whom are expats) know how to party hard and genuinely have fun.
It doesn’t matter if we don’t win. We were nominated for two films, which itself is amazing and a huge accomplishment. We’re here to celebrate all our hard work.
Cheers to all those who work at Weta (Digital and Workshop) who have put forth an immense amount of hours toward bringing the best films to life!
This goes down in the books as an ‘Academy Affair to Remember.’
